Toronto – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is calling on the International Community to sanction Federal government authorities whom it says are obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to internally displaced people at Hitsats camp and other internally displaced camps in the region.
In a statement it released on Wednesday, which is addressed to mediators of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities agreement, it accused the Federal government of “false claims,” “active obstruction” and not resolving “root cause.”
The statement came weeks after shocking video purportedly recorded at the camp disasterous famine situation.
The Federal Risk Management Commission recently claimed that humanitarian food aid was delivered to camps after claims from activists on social media “exposed” the famine situation in Hitsats camp where over 300 people died of hunger, according to their claims, since July last year. TPLF says the federal government claims of aid distribution is “false.”
Regarding obstruction of aid delivery , the TPLF said “Government criminalized community relief, social media activists raising funds face threats. Tik Tok creators forced to deposit tens of millions of birr into government accounts, seizing grassroots resources. Diaspora funding blocked.”
There was a resource mobilization effort after the viral video was shared on social media. Social media personalities like Adonay were able to raise about 11 million Ethiopian birr. However, there appears to be suspicion on the part of the government that the story was politically motivated.
The government position was that all aid efforts had to be channeled through the Federal government. There has been accusation in the past that the TPLF redirected humanitarian aid to deliveries to support its war against the Federal government.
Another key accusation from the TPLF is that the Federal government failed to return IDPs to places in accordance with the Pretoria agreement. However, Getachew Reda, who used to be a central committee member and head of foreign relations of TPLF, that the TPLF itself was an impediment to the return of IDPs ,and that it is “holding them as hostages for political purposes.”
The TPLF wants return of IDPs with armed groups to places like Wolkait and Raya – areas which TPLF annexed to Tigray after taking central government power in 1991. Residents in those localities reject the return of armed groups to the areas.

Some individuals never learn and this Debre with his gang are those who refuse to take a lesson or two from experience. They adamantly oppose the golden rule that any group of people in that country can not win victory over injustice by fighting it all alone. That has been proven every where and in Tigray in particular since the 1970’s. Millions have died on the battlefields and still his region can feed its starving citizens. What a sad predicament has befallen those noble and upright people of Tigray!!!
