Toronto – General Michael Langley, Commander of United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) was on a visit to Ethiopia this week where the met with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopia’s Defense Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula.
The meeting with Abiy focused on “ bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest,” as Abiy Ahmed himself announced on his social media page.
Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula revealed more details as to what was discussed during their meeting. “We had a deep discussion on the security of the region. We have talked about where there are problems [in the region] and where there are opportunities,” he told journalists.
Yet, it did not specify as to what issues are identified as problems and what are identified as opportunities. General Michael Langley was in Somaliland before this trip to Ethiopia. There are indications that the U.S. is likely to recognize Somaliland as an independent state.
The Horn of Africa has been experiencing tension. Worsening relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and the tension in the Tigray region of Ethiopia is part of the reason for it. The conflict in Sudan is another factor. The state of security in Somalia with Al-Shabaab threatening to take over the government in Mogadishu is also part of the problems.
However, the discussion between General Michael Langley and Ethiopia’s Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula seems to have included topics from the Red Sea and Middle East.
“In the region, they [the U.S.] national interest and we too have national interest. We have agreed to work together. They want ‘peaceful Red Sea’, ‘peaceful East Africa’ ‘peaceful Middle East’ and ‘peaceful Indian ocean’” Berhanu Jula added.
Notably, General Michael Langley was involved in controversy over his remark on Burkina Faso’s leader, Ibrahim Traore, who is seen as a visionary and iconic African leader. He accused him , before the US Senate Armed Services Committee in April this year , where he accused Burkina Faso’s leader, “of misusing the country’s gold reserves to fund personal protection.”
