Toronto – Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), state-owned media in the country fired several journalists ahead of the 7th national election which is scheduled to take place next month.
However, the dismissal doesn’t appear to be related to the election – at least on the surface.
Borkena sources in Addis Ababa reported that journalists were raising demands over salary increment as the cost of living continues to be unbearable as is the case with public servants in the other sectors.
In addition to journalists, other support staff of the organizations including drivers were supporting the demand.
The management responded to the employees to elect representatives to hold discussion with the executive.
Days after the representatives held discussion with the management, four of the representatives were fired without any prior warning.
Twenty others who reportedly supported the demand are reportedly given final warning notice.
The names of those journalists who are fired is not immediately available.
According to sources, Biniyam Eero, CEO of the EBC is behind the decision. It was prime minister Abiy Ahmed who nominated him for the position and was appointed in December 2025. It is customary for the current Ethiopian parliament to approve nomination from the prime minister.
The management decision to fire the four journalists and the warning letter to those who reportedly supported the demand for a livable salary shocked the rest of the EBC staff. EBC is said to have well over 1000 employees including support staff.
At the time of this writing, EBC has not released a statement explaining its decision to fire four senior journalists.
The Ethiopian government has been linked to media repression in the country including those that do not cover political contents.

You watch it now. We will see those fired employees on YouTube and other platforms with their own brand new spanking channels suddenly demonizing the very regime and leaders they were deifying for years. But first they have to slip away of the country and seek political asylum. Some one who fled the Mengistu regime once told me how applicants for such protection have changed the landscape over the years since 1991. He put it in a rather comical way. He said all you to do is point one of your middle fingers at a high placed government official and flee the country. Then ask for political asylum. Than includes singers and entertainers who saw a lucrative opportunity with a growing size of our Diaspora. Some are even students who were allowed to leave with diplomatic passports on scholarships and later turned out to be loud mouthed activists demanding Ethiopia to get out of what made itself whole. Hey you connivers calling yourself Anchor this Media this or that! You will have serious competition soon and they have the latest style that you don’t have.
