Toronto – The fighting between the Fano forces and the government forces in the Amhara region continued this week.
According to DW Amharic, Fano forces took control of several areas in the region. It cited a resident from the area who reported that “Checheho, Debre Zebit, Geregera, and Flakit areas are under the control of Fano forces.”
Government forces have attempted to retake towns in the east part of North Wollo, Raya Kobo area and Last area like Muja and Kulmesk. However, they are said to have sustained a significant loss and did not manage to control these areas.
“Fano forces played as if they were retreating to let government forces control locations but Fano forces exploited centers of gravity locations. Government forces did not even manage to withdraw even with a single soldier,” eyewitnesses told the source.
Another resident from Bilbla, Lasta, is cited as saying that the Fano forces were in control of the areas for a “long time” but calm is restored in the area over the past two days.
There was a reported fighting near Beklo Manekia, Sanka area, on Friday but no further detail was available. It was in this location that government forces suffered an unprecedented loss about three weeks ago.
On the other hand, the federal government is making statements that tend to look down on rebel groups.
DW Amharic cited Kebede Desisa, State Minister for Government Communications services, as saying “the extremist force does not have a capacity to fight [the defense force] except for provocation.”
Spokesperson of the Ethiopian Defense Force, Brigadier General Getnet Adane, was contacted to explain about the situation in the Amhara region. He declined saying he can only respond if the question comes from the Government communication Ministry, DW reported.
The Ministry was contacted too. The response was “there is no special information that is suitable for the media; the extremist group is making provocations everywhere but does not have the capacity to stand its ground and fight.”
