Toronto, Canada —  At least 13 civilians are reportedly killed in Horo Guduru zone , Oromia region of Ethiopia, when gunmen opened fire.

According to a report from DW Amharic which cited residents from the area as a source, the incident occurred on Tuesday in Umuru district, Agemsa town. The gunmen launched the attack around 6: 00 a.m.

“Yesterday [Tuesday] early 12 o’clock [6 :00 a.m. local time] gunmen known as Fano who came from East Wollega Kiremu opened fire and about 13 were killed,” residents are cited as saying.

Women and elders are among the victims.

The gunmen pillaged the town and took away livestock, residents say

Residents told the source that the gunmen operate in Kiremu district and its area.

Another resident who spoke to DW Amharic said ” one of the victims was taken to Bure. In general, other than those killed government soldiers and civilians, in Agemsa town only we have buried six civilians including two women.”

Residents say the security situation in the area has been complicated as there have been recurring security incidents. Lives have been lost. Properties looted.

“The conflict needs a durable solution,” residents say.

DW Amharic said efforts to reach out to government officials in Umuru district and Horo Guduru zone to get their remarks on the situation was unsuccessful.

Hailu Adugna, Oromia region Communication Office head, is cited as saying that gunmen were launching a coordinated attack in the area.  He described them as “txido” – specifically mentioning the coalition of Fano forces and Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in East Wollega.

“They undertook operations in East Wollega and Horo Guduru to impose their will by force which was reversed by government security forces,” he added.

Fano forces reported successful operations in the Wollega region recently. However, they did not confirm if the operation was launched in coordination with OLA forces.

Before Fano recent operation in the area, there have been recurring security incidents which the regional government and residents in the area linked to “Shene” – Oromo Liberation Army Forces.  The targets in the past were mostly ethnic Amharic communities living on subsistence farming. However, there were recurring cases of assasination targeting government officials.

  1. Killing civilians means liberating people, I guess, to some people. The people of that country should take this as a harbinger for what will happen to them and how they will be treated if the so-called ‘fighters’ who are now wreaking havoc in their daily lives in the remote areas of the country will come to town to rule over them. They will make a carnage out of them, their women and children. These are bands of armed young men ‘owned’ by bloodthirsty gangsters. They will demand black milk from pink and green cows.
