Toronto – At least twenty unarmed civilians are reportedly killed in Horoguduru, Anedengoro district, Wollega, Oromia region of Ethiopia. Eleven others are wounded. Five of them are from government security forces.
Four government anti-gorilla forces are also killed in the attack. There has been a recurring attack and massacre in Abe Dengoro district.
A business man from the area is also reportedly kidnapped.
The incident occurred in Homa Gelesa locality of the district. An intense exchange of gunfire was heard in the area starting from 5 p.m. on Friday.
A five year old child and a woman were among the victims, according to DW Amharic report published on Saturday.
The source cited residents from the area as confirming that Nineteen civilians and four government security forces were killed in the attack. The damage from the attack is said to be increasing.
Another resident from the area who spoke to DW Amharic is cited as saying that the gunmen were well armed including with heavy weaponry, and carried out attacks in the Tulu Moti and Homa Gallesa localities.
“Residents from the area are displaced,” the informants told DW Amharic. However, the number of displaced people and to where they were displaced is unspecified.
Government authorities in the district have reportedly confirmed the killings. They linked it to extremist forces, as the authorities call them, operating in the area.
Ketema Wakuma, head of the district, is cited as saying, on Saturday, that “security forces are taking measures against the gunmen.”
Authorities says the gunmen were operating from the area and also from “neighboring areas.”
Furthermore, Ketema stated that “militia forces are being trained to reverse similar attacks and that the Defense forces are supporting.”
Notably, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has been extensively operating in the area for more than five years now. The group, however, has been denying attacks on civilians.
Many of the attacks in the past primarily targeted ethnic Amharas.

It looks that if you want to be a ‘liberation army’ you have to kill civilians and civil servants. All you have to do is drop in at night and kill everyone that refuses to collaborate with you. Then you will come up with a military communiqué telling us that you have killed and captured government forces. That is all you have to do. You see how easy that is? You guys just don’t get it.
