Local Sources Report Massive Militant Incursion, Mass Looting, and the Occupation of Religious Centers as Residents Demand Urgent Protection

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Central Ethiopia Regional Government faces intense public criticism for failing to deploy adequate security forces to neutralize and expel Shene militants operating in the Sodo District of the East Gurage Zone.
Local sources report that an unprecedented wave of heavily armed militants crossed border points into the district, overrunning local communities, raiding public institutions, and occupying historical religious centers as operating hideouts.
According to sources on the ground, an estimated 2,000 Shene fighters armed with heavy weaponry launched a coordinated, multi-directional offensive targeting peaceful farming communities and administrative centers.
On August 18, 2026, the militant forces opened heavy fire on public service offices, commercial hubs, and residential properties. The raid resulted in civilian casualties, extensive looting, and the abduction of local residents before the main body of attackers retreated, while a secondary faction remains holed up within historic religious structures in the area.
Despite partial withdrawals, sources confirm that significant concentrations of heavily armed militants remain stationed near the border zone. The nearby town of Suten remains particularly vulnerable, with residents expressing deep alarm over potential threats to historical heritage sites, local infrastructure, and sacred institutions.
Critics and community members have questioned the regional leadership’s commitment to protecting the Gurage Zone. While the Central Ethiopia Region’s Peace and Security Bureau acknowledged conducting an initial assessment, officials have faced sharp criticism for failing to release transparent data regarding total casualties, displaced persons, and property damage.
Furthermore, the regional security bureau downplayed the size of the invading force, reporting that only around 500 militants participated in the raid. Critics argue that regional officials have relied on administrative discussions rather than decisive military deployment.
Local community advocates insist that addressing recurring security failures in the Gurage Zone requires urgent structural reforms within the regional security leadership. Detractors accuse current officials of political factionalism, administrative incompetence, and prioritizing self-serving agendas over citizen protection.
Border communities in Sodo District remain on high alert. Residents continue to demand immediate federal or regional security intervention, with community leaders issuing a stark warning: if official forces fail to provide protection, local populations must be permitted to organize and bear arms for self-defense.

This is sad story of the Ethiopian state or failed state under Abiy. These rooming gangs are allowed with impunity to burn and raid communities. And there is no response by the fed to hunt & apprehend. All Ethiopians should arm themselves to protect & defend themselves as there is no gov to do it.
