TORONTO, Canada — Amhara regional State is calling for a peaceful negotiation with Fano forces. This time the regional state used the description “fano” unlike previous extensive use of “extremists forces”.
The call came from the speaker of the region’s council, Fantu Tesfaye.
The regional state media quoted her as saying “the ongoing conflicts and wars in the Amhara region are damaging the region’s capacity to develop.”
To think about democracy alone without development is empty or dream, the speaker added.
She was speaking during the sixth session of the regional council meeting in Bahir Dar, according to the source.
Apart from the conflict situation in the region, she stated that “the country has extensive limitations in terms of development and that its citizens are not free from misery.
“The country has not realized prosperity at a level comparable to its potential,” she said, according to the Amhara Media Corporation (AMC) report. The ruling prosperity party has been making claims of noticeable prosperity.
In an interview with AMC, Prime Minister Abiy made claims that a lot has been achieved over the past five years but the “challenges in the coming five years are tough. One that will not let you sleep.”
The speaker of the Amhara region council has also remarked on democratic governance. ” A development that drifted from democracy will face sustainability issues.” She stated that it is the priority of the council to ensure people’s demands are addressed through a knowledge based approach to strike a balance between democracy and development.
The Fano forces have not yet remarked on the call for peace.
The Amhara region has been experiencing conflict for three years now. It started in August 2023 when the Federal government launched a military operation with the stated objective of “disarming Fano forces” after declaring a state of emergency. Initially, the “operation” was intended to last a few weeks.
