High-level talks in Addis Ababa focus on strengthening U.S.-Ethiopia bilateral ties, expanding private-sector investment, and addressing security challenges in the Horn of Africa

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Newly appointed United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos in Addis Ababa to discuss bilateral ties, commercial expansion, and security cooperation across the Horn of Africa.
The diplomatic engagement follows the framework established during the U.S.-Ethiopia Bilateral Structured Dialogue held in Washington, D.C., in May 2026. The meeting centered on expanding trade and investment opportunities while addressing persistent regional instability that threatens economic growth.
Assistant Secretary Garcia highlighted the direct link between sustainable peace and economic prosperity, urging Ethiopian officials to advance regional de-escalation efforts. Highlighting the human cost of prolonged instability in the Horn of Africa, U.S. diplomats emphasized that lasting economic recovery and investor confidence require durable peace, active conflict reduction, and the protection of civilian livelihoods across the broader region.
Foreign Minister Gedion and Assistant Secretary Garcia reviewed ongoing efforts to deepen the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Addis Ababa and Washington. Their discussions focused on expanding private-sector investment, facilitating bilateral commercial ties, and enhancing trade mechanisms designed to support economic stability.
The two officials also evaluated joint defense and security cooperation frameworks, assessing mutual interests in stabilizing regional flashpoints. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of maintaining direct diplomatic channels to align economic development goals with sustainable security strategies across East Africa.
