Toronto – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Monday for a working visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia announced.
He was greeted by Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye, who was recently appointed as State Minister for Foreign Affairs, replacing Mesganu Arega, upon arrival at Bole International Airport.
The minister led what is described as a “high-level trade delegation,” seemingly to explore investment opportunities in the country. Ethiopia has expressed interest in adopting agricultural development models from Israel and has been seeking partnerships in that area.
According to the Ministry, the Israeli Foreign Minister will meet with senior Ethiopian government officials to discuss “ways of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.”
He has already held talks with his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timothewos. Apart from strengthening bilateral relations, “cooperation on regional issues of mutual interest” was a key agenda item during their discussion. Agriculture, health, education, and technology were also identified as sectors for cooperation between the two countries.
Gedion visited Israel in March this year and held talks with Gideon Sa’ar regarding bilateral relations and developments in the Horn of Africa.
Upon returning from his trip to Israel, Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs briefed the diplomatic corps in Addis Ababa, during which he accused the TPLF faction under Debretsion of clandestinely working with foreign powers to destabilize the Horn of Africa region. He did so without explicitly naming the faction and the external power. The TPLF has reportedly been collaborating with the Eritrean government following the collapse of the alliance between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration and the Eritrean government, which was evident during the two-year war between the TPLF and the federal government.
Apart from Eritrea, Egypt is also reportedly involved in the regional crisis, as it has been working to isolate Ethiopia from neighboring countries. The latest Egyptian agreement was with Djibouti. The Israeli Foreign Minister’s visit to Ethiopia is presumed to have implications for Israel’s stance regarding the tense situation in the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Israeli Minister Gideon Sa’ar as saying that Ethiopia is “a key partner for Israel due to its position as a major gateway to Africa.” The Minister highlighted that this visit to Ethiopia marks the beginning of Israel’s engagement in Africa under his leadership.
He is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

This is the right move on both sides. The peoples of these two countries were victims of the same fascism in the 1930’s and 40’s. Their peoples were mass murdered by poisonous chemicals during those years. Now both have those dark days behind them, they have a lot to share in technology and natural resources. The entire Arabian Peninsula has patched up past hostile policies against Israel since the Abraham Accords in 2020. The current or any government to follow in the old country should never make the same mistake the late Emperor did in 1973 under regional duress. Israel has plenty of extremely useful knowledge wealth that the old country can develop its unexploited vast natural resources. I’m with it.
