Toronto – Escalating tension in the Tigray region of Ethiopia has been gripping the nation with fears of another war in the region. It has not recovered from the two years war between 2020 and 2022 which is said to have claimed an estimated one million lives including from the Afar and Amhara regions.
Creeping coup d’état Getachew Reda, President of the Interim Administration – reported several weeks ago seems to be completed with his ousting.
He fled to Addis Ababa last Wednesday following what was said to be a tense situation in Mekelle where forces loyal to Debretison Gebremichael, leader of one faction of the TPLF which held its “illegal” party congress in August 2024, took control of government offices by forces. A day before he fled, at least five residents of Adi Gudom were wounded as they resisted forceful takeover of office in the district.
It is now clear that Getachew is not going back to Mekelle, at last as president of the Interim Administration. Sources with links to Tigray reported, on Saturday, that Tadesse Worede ,who has been serving as deputy administration of the Interim Government while maintaining his role as “Commander of Tigray Forces” is appointed to replace Getachew. It is the Prime Minister who can make appointments in accordance with the Pretoria Agreement. However, the office of the Prime Minister did not make an official announcement about the leadership changes in Tigray.
The Federal government has mostly been silent about the ongoing crisis in the Tigray region even as supporters of the Debretsion faction broke into city administrations in Adigrat. It was only on Friday that it , through the Minister for Foreign Affairs, accused the Debretsion faction of causing instability by working with “foreign powers.”
Meanwhile, there is still tension in the region that could lead to conflict. Many, including opposition leaders in the region like Gebru Asrat, tend to see Eritrea’s involvement in the crisis and more escalation. Eritrea denied any involvement in the the dispute within the TPLF.
Tadesse Worede dismisses the fear. The Defense Force will not enter the Tigray region, he added. “There is no issue that leads to war/conflict with the Federal Forces or other entity,” He also argues that “There will be no security problem.”
Tadesse is an influential figure among leaders of the army in the region – which was supposed to be disarmed, demobilized and reintegrated to the community – and majority of the army commanders support the Debretsion faction as they have officially disclosed last month.
He is dismissing the possibility of war in the region. He also argued that what was unveiled in the region last week – the forceful takeover of offices – has nothing to do with the military. “It is unthinkable that the military will take over power.”
The Getachew Reda faction is said to have more than 90 percent of support in the region which he linked to a desire for peace. And they seem to be opposed to the Debretsion faction taking over power in the region. It remains to be seen if that is not causing a clash at some point.

The demon is back. When it stayed silent for more than a week, I thought the nightmare it created is over for now. The earthquake is with a vengeance. It had hit the same area near Awash with a 5.5 earthquake on Saturday. That is one the most powerful tremor to rattle the area in the current spell. My family’s prayers are with the people affect by this ordeal.
