Toronto – Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Saturday called for an urgent peaceful resolution of political tension in Tigray so that it will not cause further damage  on human rights in the region.

It said it has been following the tension between Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) leaders within and outside  of the Tigray  Region Interim Administration which it says has been escalating recently and its implication on the peace and human rights situation.

EHRC made a reference to the incident in Adi Gudum – which is 40 kilometers from Mekelle – after the Interim Administration President Getachew Reda suspended three senior military generals. It was reported that their followers made a move to control government institutions by force . At least four residents who resisted the move were wounded.  EHRC said that the incident  impacted daily activities of the residents and caused concern on human rights.

According to the update from EHRC, four people including the mayor were arrested and released after days. Those who were arrested are, it appears, from the Interim Administration. Forces loyal to the other faction of TPLF under Derbrestion Gebremichal behind the incident. Ethiopia’s government funded Human Rights Commission said it is investigating the incident.

There was another incident in Saharti district on March 11, a day after the incident in Adi Gudom, security head of the district and Tigray Freedom party member were arrested for several days and released. Again, the Interim Administration does not appear to be behind the arrest.

The rights group also noted about the incidents of removing mayors of Adigrat and Mekelle which could worsen the fear in the community.

EHRC believes the tension and dispute in the region could reverse the relative peace in the region that reigned following the signing of the Pretoria Agreement. It also said that the situation could create  a challenge for the full implementation of the agreement and a concern for human rights violations.

It called for “all concerned” parties to “refrain from actions that could aggravate the problem as well as resolve their political differences through dialogue and consensus based on the law.”

The day the EHRC released the statement, it was reported that Tadesse Worede – who is said to be close to the armed forces who support the Debretsion faction – was appointed as president of Tigray region Interim Administration. It signifies the unceremonious removal of Getachew Reda who already fled to Addis Ababa. It is the Federal government that removed him from his position – apparently under political and military pressure in the sense that the group was feared to start a war – against the Federal government given the precedent in November 2020 which triggered the two years devastating war.

Tadesse Worede on Saturday said the Federal government does not need to deploy force in Tigray. He said “there will not be a security problem.” He also said that there will not be any war internally or with other entities.
