Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Tigray Interim Administration (TIA) has announced a halt to salaries and benefits for officials who are currently outside the Tigray region without proper authorization. This directive, issued by Lieutenant General Tadesse Worede, the newly appointed President of the TIA, took effect in June 2025.
The decision was communicated through an internal letter, though it follows recent local media reports highlighting that many of the affected individuals are former government officials who left their posts without permission. The letter, however, is said to have not mentioned who these officials are.
This order comes on the heels of a significant leadership change in the region. On April 8, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede to lead the interim administration, replacing Getachew Reda. Tadesse previously served as deputy chief administrator from March 2023 and was a senior TPLF military commander during the 2020–22 conflict.
The leadership shake-up is a direct result of ongoing divisions within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). One faction, led by Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael, has been in conflict with Getachew’s group. This internal strife intensified in August 2024 when the party formally split into two rival camps: one led by Getachew and the other by Debretsion.
The rift deepened in early 2025 when Debretsion loyalists took control of several towns, including Adigrat, an event Getachew publicly condemned as a “coup.” During this crisis, Getachew reportedly fled to Addis Ababa, prompting intervention from the federal government.
Following his removal from the Tigray interim administration, Getachew Reda transitioned into a federal role. On April 11, 2025, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed him as an Advisor on East African Affairs, granting him the rank of ministerial role.
Besides, Getachew has since embarked on a new political endeavor. On May 26, 2025, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) provisionally registered his new party, Tigray Democratic Solidarity (Semret), which is believed to offer a liberal alternative to the TPLF.
