Toronto – Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for an official working visit.

Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs, greeted him upon arrival at Bole International Airport.  Ethiopian born Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia,  Dr. Avraham Neguise,  attended the official reception at Bole International Airport.

The purpose of the visit, which came barely a week after Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan meeting with Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa, is said to be strengthening the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In reference to his meeting with Issac Herzog, PM Abiy Ahmed wrote on his Facebook page  “…We explored  the relations between Ethiopia and Israel and considered ways to improve collaboration in areas of mutual interest.”

Issac Herzog on his part shared on  X page  about his meeting with the Ethiopian Prime Minister which he described as “great.”

The message he wrote was in Amharic, Ethiopia’s official language with well over 100 million speakers across the country and beyond.

Translation of part of his message reads : “The relationship between Israel and Ethiopia has great potential. Therefore, we have had fruitful discussions on issues that benefit both peoples, including innovation, science, technology, agriculture, food security, water and energy, as well as regional cooperation, to strengthen our bilateral relationship.”

He also met with Taye Atseke Sellasie, his Ethiopian counterpart.

“Received Israel President Isaac Herzog.Held discussions on our historical and cultural ties. Emphasized Bete-Israel community is a living bridge between our countries. Ethiopia consistently supports the two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in peace,” President Taye wrote on his X page.

Isaac Herzog invited Taye Aske Selassie to visit Israel.

The Mossad Commentary page on X shared information that the president is scheduled to me with leadership of the local Jewish community.

Israel has been attempting to enhance its diplomatic engagement with Africa in recent months. In late December 2025, it became the first country to recognize Somaliland, Somalia’s breakaway region in the north that declared its own government in 1991. According to an Israeli news source, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi is scheduled to visit Israel next month.

While Israel’s relation with Ethiopia has been getting stronger than before in recent years, Türkiye ,whose president visited Ethiopia last week, has openly criticized Israel’s diplomatic engagement with Somaliland.  Erdoğan described Somaliland’s recognition, “not good for Somaliland and not good for the region.”

There have been reports that Somaliland and Ethiopian officials have been holding conversations. There is anticipation that Ethiopia could follow Israel’s suite in recognizing Somaliland.
