Toronto –  President of  Türkiye Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday arrived in Ethiopia for an official visit and was accorded a state reception.

Abiy Ahmed revealed during a press conference that he initiated the visit when he met with  Erdoğan  on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in South Africa.

The two leaders held a meeting at the Jubilee Palace where an official state reception was organized.

“We have reached an agreement on a number of things. The two countries are to plan and work towards enhancing the trade relation between Ethiopia and Türkiye to be at least $1 billion or more,” Abiy Ahmed stated during the press conference.

Diversifying the business sectors is one of the areas of action identified to achieve the goal. Turkish companies are expected to enter Ethiopia for investment, according to information from the PM. However, he did not specify the sectors.

Currently, the volume of trade is  below $300 million, and is in favor of Turkey. According to sources, Turkey exports construction steel and textiles to Ethiopia.

Turkey is said to have well over $2.5 billion worth of investment in Ethiopia in agriculture, construction and textile – among other things. Its cultural presence in the country is also strong with its own community schools and other cultural programs.

Another key point PM Abiy raised during the press conference is regarding sea access emphasizing how important it is for the 130 million population that is expecting over 10.2 percent economic growth this year.

He framed that continuity of the growth could be in question unless the sea access issue is resolved. “Ethiopia has been made a prisoner of geography which is not right,” Abiy said describing it as the work of Ethiopia’s “enemy.”  He said it “is unacceptable.”

Turkey has pledged to support, diplomatically, Ethiopia’s quest to access the sea peacefully.

The two countries also reached agreement to work together in the fight against terrorism in the region.

Erdogan  on his part emphasized on what he described as “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the region.”

He added that  “Türkiye would never want to see new conflict and new pain added to those who already suffered in this region.”  He urged the countries in the region to resolve problems on their own and for the region “not to be a battle ground for foreign powers.”

Erdogan expressed sentiment against the state of Somaliland. He said  “Israel’s recognition of Somaliland would be of no benefit to either Somaliland or to the Horn of Africa.” There has been rumors over the past few days that Ethiopia and Somaliland are holding discussion which is believed to lead to Somaliland’s recognition of Ethiopia.

  1. I would rather see one of the members of NATO making such massive deals with the old country than with those two goon in Moscow and Beijing.

    • My Friend Ittu,

Wait a minute? you must be joking sir, how?
NATO has been unfair for the old country indirectly for so long to satisfy Egypt and their interest? Turkey is also one of the most important member of NATO by the way, but i am afraid Turkey will join the East at some point due to EU unfairness towards Turkey’s politics and economy.

      • My Friend Teddy Red Line back at you!!!
Thank you for being civil in your conversation with me. My take is the old country and its young people have and 3ill have more benefits to gain if their governments work closely with the Western government than those in Moscow and Beijing. When I say this I have proven historical facts to back me up. I’m talking about for the periods after the early 1960’s. I’ve Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile and to an extent Malaysia. When the educated among us were screaming with their blabber mouths with ‘Yankee Go Home’ Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Chile and Malaysia were asking and pleading the West to come in and stay. They sent their young people in their thousands to every western country and mostly USA to learn the latest for development and those young people never disappointed. They absorbed everything like a sponge and went back. Taiwan used to be the chosen destination for the GI’s during their R&R breaks and tourists for extra curricular pleasures right through the 1960’s. It was the brothel of that part of the world. When those educated young people returned they did not organize demonstrations but they instead went down to work starting cottage industries. But ours chose a different route. They were chicken scratching with Notes about Western Imperialism’ and others became devout Marxist/Leninist’ and vowed to go back through Bale and not Bole. They took the oath of allegiance to establish ‘Proletarian Dictatorship’ through the barrels of the gun in a country that had no more than 30,000 ‘proletariat’ When that did not cut the mustard for them, they picked up another battle cry from their demonic scriptures. Now they became lions ‘lenchos’, ‘woyanes’ and some other names hard to pronounce and understand. Meanwhile, in a matter of a decade and a half those young educated Taiwanese returnees began hiring women to work in their cottage factories. Women there stopped going to harems/brothels but to awaiting factories. I had seen it first during my trips there on business beginning the late 1970’s. We missed the boats, as they say but the opportunities still not completely dead and gone yet. Yes, Taiwan was not to hope governance wise during those days but the middle class was growing by leaps and bounds as the result of fast growing industrialization. That massive middle class was the one that showed the despots the door beginning the late 1980’s. The same happened in Chile, South Korea. Ours were instigating the youth to go out and torch factories. That is enough for me for now. Please pardon me for some typos.

Blessings to you and your family
        .
