(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially convened the 74th Extraordinary Session of the IGAD Council of Ministers today, September 15, 2026, in Djibouti City, Djibouti.

The high-level regional assembly brings together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and designated diplomats from IGAD member states to address pressing peace, security, and institutional governance issues across the Horn of Africa.

The extraordinary session provides a strategic platform for member states to evaluate prevailing security dynamics across the region, review ongoing peace initiatives, and align joint diplomatic approaches.

Deliberations focus on enhancing collective security frameworks to mitigate active regional conflicts, manage cross-border security concerns, and foster sustained economic and political cooperation among member nations. IGAD representatives reaffirmed their commitment to coordinated action in addressing security vulnerabilities and promoting long-term stability for the Horn of Africa.

Beyond peace and security consultations, the Council is reviewing key institutional matters vital to the organizational architecture of the bloc. Primary among these is assessing progress on the implementation and strengthening of the IGAD Treaty to adapt the Authority’s operational mandate to evolving regional priorities.

As one of IGAD’s principal policy-making organs, the Council of Ministers guides executive policy, oversees regional cooperation, and drives institutional reform. The Council is scheduled to conclude the session by issuing a formal communiqué detailing its key resolutions, policy directives, and strategic decisions.
