IGAD Responds To Eritrea’s Withdrawal, Allegations Of “Forfeited” Mandate

IGAD Hopes Eritrea will reconsider its decision

Borkena

Toronto – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Friday responded to Eritrea’s withdrawal from the Organization which was formally established in 1996 replacing the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD).

The statement came after Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Eritrea has “formally” informed IGAD Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu,  its decision to withdraw from the Organization.

The Ministry has provided an explanation.

“IGAD has not only failed  to meet the aspirations of the peoples of the region, but instead played a deleterious role becoming a tool against targeted Member States; particularly Eritrea…,” Eritrea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement. This was, Eritrea said, the reason for its suspension of the organization in 2007.

It reactivated membership of the organization in June 2023 with the hope that IGAD “would heed Eritrea’s call for reform and rectify its past records.” It has attended some meetings.

It appears the organizations failed to meet Eritrea’s expectations.

Furthermore, Eritrea made a serious allegation that the organization  “forfeited its legal mandate and authority; offering no discernible strategic benefit to all its constituencies and failing to contribute substantively to the stability of the region.”

In its response to the allegation, IGAD said that it did not take part in meetings or activities since it rejoined in 2023.  No official statement was published about it until yesterday, and the secretariat called it “patience and good will.”

“Since June 2023, IGAD notes with regret that Eritrea has not participated in IGAD meetings, programmes, or activities. Throughout this period, the Secretariat has exercised patience and goodwill, while remaining open and available for constructive engagement,” the release from the secretariat reads partly.

As to the allegation about its mandate, it said it “remains firmly committed” to it.  As well, it expressed intent to “continue” reaching out to Eritrea to reconsider its decision.

The organization has six member states from the region namely  Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, and Djibouti. The annual membership fee to the organization is about $1.5 million dollars. The Organization also gets funding from entities like the European Union.

  1. I just got off the phone after talking to my longtime homeboys Yemane and Al-Toweel Isu for more than an hour. Both are so pissed off at the behavior of them niggers(that was their word, not mine) at IGAD. They told me why they are so mad as hell. They told me that the rest of IGAD members were supposed to stand up and bow down whenever Eritrean representatives walk into the meeting room. After repeated warnings, Al-Toweel decided to recall his representatives. Eritrea never applied for membership and it was there as an observer both in IGAD and AU anyway. They also told me that EU(European Union) has accepted Al-Toweel’s application for membership and that was approved to be effective on January 1, 2026. That is because Al-Toweel Isu, Yemane and the rest of their entourage are all Abruzzis. So Ethiopia! You’re toast. Al-Toweel Isu will be your ruling mom and dad for centuries to come. Ethiopia never existed anyway and it was cooked up out of myth and distortion which makes those Amharas, Oromos, Tigres and the rest of 80 linguistic groups of people genetically distorted people. Again, those were the words of Al-Toweel Isu and Yemane, not mine. I’m just telling you what they said. Don’t kill the messenger here.

  2. Was this secretary standing up and bowing down to my longtime homie Al-Toweel Isu or sitting on his desk when he said this? If he was sitting down, then he was making a serious mistake by not following the protocol.
