(Nairobi, Kenya) — Residents across multiple neighborhoods in Addis Ababa reported hearing heavy explosions late last night, with diplomatic sources confirming that blasts occurred in the capital at midnight on Wednesday.

Local residents living in the Gotera and Bole areas reported hearing loud explosions starting after 12:20 AM.

An anonymous resident of the Gotera area stated that at approximately 12:20 AM, a heavy explosion shook the residential building they were in, triggering multiple car alarms across the neighborhood. Upon inspecting the surrounding area, the resident reported seeing no unusual movements and was unable to determine whether the blast originated near military installations or the Fourth Division compound.

In the Bole area, another resident reported hearing a loud explosion at 1:00 AM, noting its close proximity to their residential sector and suggesting it may have occurred near the Ethiopian National Defense Force headquarters or surrounding military installations.

The reports of explosions in the capital coincide with ongoing developments along the border between the Afar and Tigray regions.

Humanitarian organizations stated that thousands of residents have been displaced from Afar towns recently controlled by Tigrayan forces. Meanwhile, the Afar Regional Government announced that its forces have successfully retaken and secured control of the border towns of Erebti and Ab’ala.

Expressing deep concern over the escalation of hostilities, the international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution through diplomatic dialogue. African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the military escalation in northern Ethiopia as extremely concerning and urged all parties to stop the conflict immediately.
