Toronto – This week the Federal government deployed another round of massive forces in the Gojjam area of the Amhara region with the aim to decisively defeat Fano forces.
However, based on claims from Fano, about 500 government soldiers are killed and 27 captured. It is Asres Mare, one of the top Fano leaders in Gojjam, who spoke to Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) who disclosed it.
From what Asres said, the Fano forces were able to stretch government forces to many parts of Gojjam. In addition to the loss of the force, Gojjam Fano is making claims that it has seized more than 180 AK 47 and two group assault weapons.
The Ethiopian Defense force is circulating a different narrative. It said that it has killed 31 Fano forces in the Gojjam area – a figure Asres Mare dismisses as false – according to an EMS report.
Gondar and parts of Wollo have also experienced intense battles this week. The Federal police forces deployed in the Gondar area have suffered a serious loss. A video footage purportedly showing captured forces (dozens of them) was widely shared on social media about two days ago.
Abiy Ahmed’s administration paints an image that Fano forces can not defeat the government , and he said in his recent meeting with opposition parties that he is “one million percent sure” about it.
But the prevalent realities of government forces losing battles to Fano forces in the Amhara region are not changing and that does not seem to support Abiy Ahmed overconfidence of winning the war in the region.
