(Nairobi, Kenya) — Addressing the nation on the occasion of the 119th Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Day, Chief of the General Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula declared that a coordinated conspiracy involving internal insurgent factions and foreign actors aimed at destabilizing the country has been completely dismantled.

Speaking at the Armed Forces General Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Field Marshal Birhanu emphasized the ENDF’s long institutional history, describing it as the primary anchor of national sovereignty across successive political eras. He cautioned against political entanglements within the armed forces, asserting that institutional neutrality is vital to safeguarding the state from internal breakdown. The army chief criticized opposition groups advocating for a transitional government, characterizing their efforts as foreign-driven campaigns orchestrated alongside historical adversaries.

In his address, Field Marshal Birhanu alleged that “Fano” armed groups operating in coordination with external interests—stretching from Cairo to Khartoum and Asmara—launched coordinated offensives across the North Wollo, Wag Hemra, and Afar fronts. He stated that government forces intercepted significant shipments of smuggled weaponry routed through the Port of Massawa, thwarting attempts by insurgent coalitions to dismantle the national defense apparatus. He further asserted that repeated military campaigns by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) over recent years have ended in military failure, leaving regional populations dependent on external humanitarian assistance while failing to achieve political objectives. Calling for an immediate halt to armed insurrection, Field Marshal Birhanu urged non-state combatants to lay down their arms and pursue political ambitions through peaceful, constitutional mechanisms.

However, the Chief of the General Staff’s declarations of total victory stand in sharp contrast to ground realities across northern and central Ethiopia, where heavy fighting continues to escalate. Local sources and field reports indicate intense active engagements across multiple fronts in the Amhara and Tigray regions. Ground battles, heavy artillery exchanges, and intense urban and rural clashes are actively taking place between federal defense forces—supported by regional militias—and Fano insurgent forces throughout the Amhara Region. Despite official assertions that opposition coalitions have been neutralized, volatile security conditions and violent clashes persist across regional border zones, signaling that the ongoing conflict remains unresolved.
