European Union Calls for Immediate De-Escalation and Protection of Humanitarian Operations Amid Renewed Fighting in Northern Ethiopia

NAIROBI, Kenya — The European Union released an official press statement expressing grave concern regarding the rapidly escalating conflict across northern Ethiopia, drawing attention to civilian impacts and recent aerial drone strikes.
European authorities highlighted that troop movements across multiple areas—including the seizure and control of Mekelle, Aksum, and Shire airports in the Tigray Region by Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces—have heightened regional instability.
European officials noted that they have been closely monitoring numerous drone strikes conducted in recent weeks.
The press statement called for an immediate de-escalation of military operations, warning that present hostilities threaten to undo progress toward a sustainable ceasefire. Emphasizing that political disputes cannot be resolved through military force, European authorities declared that adherence to International Humanitarian Law—specifically protecting civilians and respecting the neutrality and independence of humanitarian relief operations—is non-negotiable.
The statement strongly condemned attacks targeting humanitarian transport vehicles and warned against any deliberate efforts to obstruct emergency relief deliveries.
