Toronto – Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank on Sunday announced that digital services related to mobile banking, Internet banking, POS , ATM and services it offers in collaboration with third parties will be experiencing disruptions.
CBE Birr transactions will not be impacted by the disruption.
The largest state-owned bank with about 2000 branches was specific in its announcement that the services mentioned above will not be available between 3:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday
It related it to “system upgrades” and urged clients to prepare for it.
The 84 years old bank which used to have a reputation for excellence has a recent history of “systemic glitch”.
In March 2024, over 490,000 illegal transactions were made due to what was described as a “glitch” in the course of “improving the system.” At the time, Abe Sano confirmed it. The country’s intelligence unit was investigating it but the “glitch” narrative persisted.
And in May 2025, there was another report of illegal transfer in the amount of over 7.7 billion birr. The story is available here
