Toronto – Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank on Thursday announced a temporary disruption of its digital service.
In a brief social media update, the bank informed its clients that the Bank’s digital payment options will be disrupted. It is scheduled to last between Thursday and Friday.
The bank advised its clients to prepare for it .
The disruption has something to do with what the bank described as “improvement work.” However, no further detail was provided regarding the nature of the “improvement work.”
Notably, the bank system was compromised in March 2024 which the bank later claimed that it occurred during the course of “improving the digital system.” Clients were able to make cash transfers they do not have in their bank account. While sources outside of government indicated at the time that over 5 billion birr was lost, CBE claimed the amount lost was only 800 million birr. It later claimed that the money was recovered.
More recently, there was another report of fraudulent transfer of billions of birr from the Bank’s account to an individual account. The story was not verified independently.
Meanwhile, the bank has also introduced adjustments to its service fees. Much of the service fee at branch level will remain unchanged, it was said. The change will be effective as of late September this year. No clue was provided regarding the amount to be increased.
