Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister and some of his cabinet members reportedly made unannounced trip to Bahir Dar and Gondar in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

Some members of this cabinet and Bertuan Ayano, state minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who was reportedly seeking asylum in the U.S., falsely, were on the trip.

He and his entourage visited development projects in Bahir Dar and Gondar including the Megech Irrigation project.

Yet, the trip seems to have one with a political campaign. Amhara is one of the regions where the Prime Minister lost the support he used to have. It is the region where he is now facing the strongest legitimacy crisis.

Gedu Andargachew, the former Minister for Foreign Affairs President of Amhara region who is currently in the United States, revealed the legitimacy crisis the ruling party is facing in the region during his last speech in the parliament last week.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his spouse were “honored” with a traditional gown of honor in Gondar – where there is active anti-government insurgency.

In a speech he made at the historic 16th century Castle, he called on “Gondar Fanos not to waste anymore time” leading an insurgent life and “return.”

He invited the involvement of elders and religious leaders.

“Gondarians have religious leaders ; elders are there.  There are stronger men. get together and give birth to Gondar again.”

His message is understood to be a message for Fano forces operating in Gonder.  His approach to what his government describes as “call for peace” has been criticized. He has been asking fano forces ( official government wording seems to be “extrimists”)  to “lay down arms and return”

Fano forces justify their struggle with a mission to “reverse existential threat to Amhara.” The movement is one with a political goal and informal  mediation via the agency of elders does not seem to be acceptable to them.
