Ethiopian PM Meeting With Defense, Security Officials 

“Social Media Terrorism Needs to be monitored and controlled,” says Ethiopian Prime Minister

Toronto – The office of the Prime Minister on Friday announced that the meeting with defense and security officials that has been underway for days is completed. 

In a statement following its completion, the Prime Minister stated “For Ethiopia’s Prosperity to be a success, peace and security is not only an enabling condition but also the main input.”

From the statement, security issues in the country including robbery, (both in urban and rural areas), sabotage, contraband, corruption, human trafficking  and money laundering were discussed. The need to control them was discussed. 

One of the major decisions from the meeting that indicates possible crackdown against activists. 

From the prime minister’s statement , the government seems to see what it calls “social media terrorism.”  The statement urged the use of cyber technology to monitor and control it. His government has been kidnapping journalists in the past three weeks. This week alone., two Sheger F.M. journalists are arrested over the report aired via the station this week. 

At the same time, it is claimed that the meeting assessed that the defense and security apparatus are in a better stature to “defend the border, and maintain peace and security.” 

The Prime Minister also projected the image that “Ethiopian Geopolitical hardship is overcome.” 

On the other hand, sources, particularly social media sources advocating for Eritrea tend to think that the meeting between the Prime Minister and Security officials represents the culmination of preparation for war against Eritrea. 

Abiy Ahmed himself has been implicitly hinting last week that the next business (after the inauguration of GERD) is to recover sea access which is painted as a much simpler task compared to effort exerted to complete the construction of the dam.
