Toronto – Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed on Friday said his government is ready to implement  Ethiopia’s  National Dialogue Commission recommendation.

He said so during a discussion the Commission organized to present a performance report and plans for the next stage of its work.

Mesfin Araya, the commissioner, and his deputy Hirut Gebreselassie presented the performance report and plans.

Other senior Abiy Ahmed government officials including the speaker of the parliament, presidents of regional states and Commissioners attended it.

The Prime Minister made claims that his government does have a strong stand for the success of the commission, and  “not to interfere in its works.”

He also said that  his  government  “will continue to support it,”and “is ready to implement its recommendation.”

The Prime Minister also praised the works the commission achieved so far.  “The commissioners led the works in the past years with great patience, professional competence and through great challenges by committing themselves to the Oaths [they took], ” he remarked.

The eleven member commission has been facing criticism from opposition parties, Ethiopians in the Diaspora and religious bodies over lack of inclusivity. Worse, its neutrality was questioned. Nomination for members of the commission was conducted in 2022 by the Ethiopian Parliament.  The ruling party controls over 95 percent of the parliament – one of the reasons the neutrality of the commission has been facing doubts.

Opposition parties like  Oromo Federalist Congress and the opposition parties currently under the Coalition for Ethiopian Unity withdrew from the dialogue process at the early stage.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed claims that the Commission’s  work covered “over 90 percent of Ethiopia.”

The Commission hopes to continue work after the federal election  and before the end of the budget yet, as Commissioner Mesfin said.

The terms of the Commission were extended in February this year after completing its four years existence without completing its work.
