Toronto – Ethiopia’s National Dialogue Commission has been planning to engage the Diaspora community in North America to “gather agenda.”
However, it is facing resistance as the commission has been viewed as one that serves the government ‘s agenda rather than organizing a genuine dialogue to resolve decades old political crises that is said to be endangering the very existence of the country.
According to sources, the “agenda gathering” event scheduled to take place at Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. is facing opposition from different Ethiopian diaspora organizations operating in the United States.
Ethiopian American Diaspora Organizations and AEPAC released a joint statement on Thursday in which they expressed their rejection of the commission’s legitimacy to undertake the agenda gathering.
“A coalition of Ethiopian American diaspora organizations, in partnership with the American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC), today is sued a joint statement rejecting the legitimacy of the Ethiopian government’s Dialogue Commission and calling for a genuine, credible national dialogue that can deliver peace, reconciliation, and inclusive governance,” The organizations stated in their joint statement.
The statement is signed by seventeen Diaspora organizations.
There is a tendency to see the commission not only as one that lacks inclusivity but also as a tool for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Administration. Many of the major opposition parties have been repeatedly projecting similar sentiments and many of them withdraw from the process.
The Diaspora Organization who released the joint-statement underscored that ” the Ethiopian Dialogue Commission is neither credible nor capable of delivering peace or reconciliation. Evidence points to a manipulated process designed to preserve political dominance rather than empower Ethiopians to shape their future.”
They also expressed readiness to support a “genuine” dialogue.
Cosignatories of the Diaspora organizations are :
• Amara Diaspora Global Forum
• American Afar Diaspora (AAD)
• American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC)
• Ethiopian American Civic Council (EACC)
• Ethiopian American Development Council (EADC)
• Ethiopian American Diplomacy Network (EADN)
• Ethiopian Solidarity Movement Council (ESM)
• etHUB
• Geda Oromo Community (GOC)

• Harari Revival Movement (HRM)
• Horn of Africa Community
• Justice and Accountability in the Horn of Africa
• New York & New Jersey Tristate Hope for Ethiopia (H4E)
• Tigray Action Committee

At the time of this writing, the dialogue commission has not responded to the joint letter.
