Toronto – Over 95 percent of Ethiopia’s Parliament is dominated by the ruling Prosperity Party. It is like opposition voices in the parliament are missing.
Desalegne Chane, an MP from National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) – a party that is now being accused of being the ruling party’s clique- has been like a single opposition voice in the house.
He told the Ethiopian PM that “Ethiopian People are fed up with war” making a reference to the ongoing conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions.
The Prime Minister was making the issue of Assab (which is often framed by government officials as access to the Red Sea) dominant in the house this morning.
“The manner that the government raised the Red Sea agenda is like cooking in six pots and burning one,” he said.
Desalenge, who has a reputation of being a voice for the people in the parliament, elaborated his point that he believes in the importance of access to the sea for Ethiopia. However, he emphasized that “our internal affairs need to be in order first.”
He highlighted the crisis level challenge in connection with security in the country. “…The Ethiopian people is unable to move in the country and feed itself.”
He added that “our country can continue to fight for fifty years like Columbia armed groups.” Notably, the Prime Minister said, in one of his earlier appearances in the parliament, “we will fight for a thousand years ; you will never defeat us.”
When his government declared war in the Amhara region, or “military operation” as it calls it in August 2023, it stated that it would be a two or three weeks of operation.
It has been well over three years now. The Fanos forces emerged stronger than they were – operating across all areas of the Amhara region. And there does not seem an end in sight to the conflict.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed‘s response to MP Desalegne was rather accusatory. He insinuated as if Desalenge was an Eritrean operative only for calling for the government to focus on resolving internal conflict and security crisis first.

I second the claim by the honorable gentleman. kidnappings for ransom, killings of civilians and innocent civil servants by armed groups roaming the countryside are common in both Amhara and Oromia regions. Cities and towns may seem peaceful for now but it will be a matter of time before the specter upending the lives of rural area residents reaching the urban settlements. The regime will never be able to guard every home in the country. There is no tegime anywhere in the world that can do that but it is time for those in charge of running the country to look at themselves in the mirror seriously and have a deep thinking or two. The genie is out of the bottle in those two regions already but it is not too late.
