TORONTO, Canada — Debate on Tsemdo coalition has been underway for several months now. Some politicians are skeptical towards it, specifically pointing out TPLF past behaviors and die-hard political habits.
Others dismiss it entirely as risky , reasoning that “working with TPLF is unrealistic.” Also, they allege that the TPLF is an intrinsically anti-Ethiopian political entity. This group relates the unprecedented security and political crisis in the country, particularly what appears to be, as many ethnic Amhara activists argue, structurally supported attacks on ethnic Amhara as the making of TPLF. Furthermore, they see the organization as deeply anti-Amhara.
Yet, there are those who rather see the coalition as a positive development on grounds that the coalition is a military entity and a necessary military strategy.
However, the attitude towards the coalition seems to be changing slowly. The ruling Prosperity party policies and what many describe as a growing apartheid like administration is justifying the relevance of the coalition.
Some experts do not seem to see it not just as a political expediency but as a feasible coalition to reverse the existential threat Ethiopia is facing, as they put it. Major Mamo Lemma who regularly appears on Anchor Media to share his views on current affairs, tends to think that the radical ethnic nationalism character of some actors in the coalition will inevitably fade away. He also thinks that the Ethiopian government could not defeat the coalition simply because it is armed with drones. He drew on the Syrian opposition coalition experience to analyse the Tsemdo coalition.
