Ethiopian Defense Chief Of Staff Threatens Military Action Against TPLF

Borkena

Toronto – “We alone can not avert war,” Ethiopian Defense Chief of Staff,  Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, said, threatening to take action against the TPLF forces.

He was making a speech to members of the Defense Force on the occasion of the commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the attack on the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force.

The commemoration was celebrated with the theme “Never Again, Lest We Forget.”

It was the TPLF’s unexpected attack against what was said to be the largest  Command of the Defense Force that led to the bloody two years war.

The war ended with the signing of the Pretoria Agreement which was signed in November 2022.

“The TPLF has been violating the Pretoria Agreement repeatedly and making provocations inviting war,” Field Marshal Berhanu Jula said in his speech.

The Defense Chief thinks that “provocations” the TPLF has been making are more than enough to enter to war. “No matter how patient we are, if attacked it is inevitable that we will defend,” he added. He was speaking with a tone that war is inevitable.

Rhetoric of war, training of new forces and illegal relations with Eritrea are among the issues he highlighted as violations.

The core agreement of the Pretoria agreement was for the TPLF, which triggered the war, to disarm and integrate its forces into the community. On the contrary, the TPLF has been arming forces. The federal money transfer to the Tigray region, as opposition politicians from the region confirmed, is spent on the TPLF army.

The TPLF under Debretsion Gebremichael has formed a political and military alliance with the Eritrean government despite both have been denying it.

A segment of TPLF forces broke away from it standing against war in the region. Ironically, the group has to organize itself militarily in the Afar region as “Tigray Peace Force” to fight against TPLF.

The Ethiopian government is said to be behind this group.  The Defense Chief seems to have confirmed it in directly.,

He reportedly said ” the criminal TPLF should not be allowed to determine the fate of Tigray people; it is necessary to remove it with support from forces that broke away from it”

In a recent interview with NBC Ethiopia, former top TPLF official and president of Tigray region Gebru Asrat stated that “95 percent of people in the Tigray region are against war.”

TPLF on its part has recently accused the Federal government over “preparation for war.”

The 2020-22 war in the region is believed to have claimed at least 600,000 lives apart from destruction of infrastructure and property worth hundreds of billions of Ethiopian Birr.
