Ethiopia’s Ruling Party Accuses Eritrea of Fueling Conflict

Borkena

Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling party central committee and executive committee has concluded its nearly weeklong meeting which was held at Arat Kilo place.

The Party (prosperity party) released a statement on Friday making accusations, among other things, against “forces” over “attempts to create conflict” in Ethiopia through different techniques. The statement unspecified as to who these “forces” are.

However, the statement provided context saying “forces for whom the prospect of protracted war was aborted.”  The party was making a reference to the two years bloody war between the Federal government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) led forces in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

The ruling party’s council also described the forces as “enemies.”

Eritrea was involved in the war on the side of the Federal government. However, the alliance collapsed fast – especially after the Pretoria agreement. Worse, even the working relation deteriorated fast  leading to tension and consequently what is appearing more like an inevitable conflict. The ruling party’s accusation is implicitly pointing fingers at Eritrea.

Eritrea itself has been accusing Abiy Ahmed’s government of making preparations for war with the aim to take Eritrea’s sovereign land by force. The counter-accusation is made in the context of Abiy Ahmed’s government pursuit of access to the sea.  The issue of access to the sea was highlighted in the statement  as one of the success stories of the ruling party. “We have made our natural and historical right to get access to the sea an international agenda,” it said.

The Prosperity party further claimed that it had won the bloody war in Northern Ethiopia and the “military victory” culminated in the peace agreement signed in Pretoria.

However, opposition party politicians and political figures from the Tigray region of Ethiopia have recently been expressing concern that war could break out in the region again.

The shifting alliance in the region is apparently one of the factors that could potentially lead to conflict. The TPLF split led to the emergence of two forces with diverging military and political alliances. The TPLF group under Debretsion Gebremichael aligned with Eritrea while the Getachew Rega group sided with Abiy Ahmed led Federal government.

The ruling party also made accusations that armed groups fighting against the government of Ethiopia are serving the very forces whom it accused of attempting to create conflict in the country. It alleges that armed forces like Fano in the Amhara region of Ethiopia and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in the Oromia region of Ethiopia are supported by Ethiopia’s “enemies.”

The tension between the two countries has been worsening for many months now. They have mobilized their military and deployed it to the border area – particularly along the Assab port in the East.

  1. There is another statement Mother Nature made today in the old country. It had rattled the earth near a place called Debre Sina with a 4.6 magnitude earthquake. The place is just about 115 miles from the nation’s capital Addis/Finfinne. Let’s hope and pray this is the last of it.

  2. The rule of Abiy Ahmed will not last long as he is losing his control over much of the country. He has lost his ill planned and thought war in Tigray which resulted in decimation of his Oromo dominated army. The regional power Tigray taught him an unforgtettable militray lesson and made a swift advance to overthrow his government before the Biden administration intervened to save him. His war in the Amhara region is failing and even threatening Oromia which is the gift of Tigray to the Oromo people. The Oromos should not take the protection of Tigray for granted and get united to defend themselves.
