Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ruling Prosperity Party is reportedly holding an emergency meeting in the capital Addis Ababa.

Ethio News said it has learned from sources that the meeting for the party’s executive and central committee members was called on Friday.

Furthermore, it is noted that the meeting, which started on Saturday, is discussing a document on current affairs in the country and regional issues. Activities from the Eritrea and Sudan area are said to be part of the meeting agenda.

It is said to be a closed meeting with no access to media including from the state-owned media outlets.

Borkena was unable to verify the story from other sources.

Although Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed claims, during a recent interview with a state-owned media outlet, that his party has over 15 million members, it has been noticeable that the party has been facing a legitimacy crisis.

Devastating war with rampant egregious rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, lawlessness and widespread ransom kidnapping practices and unbearable cost of living are among the factors that contributed to the increasing unpopularity of the Abiy Ahmed’s party.

The Oromia region – theoretically the political base of Abiy Ahmed’s party- has been experiencing conflict over the past six years.

On the other hand, the ruling party’s assessment of its performances paints an image that it is leading the country to “prosperity.”

Defense Chief of Staff,  Field Marshal Berhanu Jula who is widely criticized for overt political support to Abiy Ahmed’s party, has reportedly claimed this week that “what has been achieved over the past seven years was not achieved over the past seventy years.”
