Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport is introducing a new nation wide plate number system replacing all the existing plate numbers for vehicles across the country.
The Ministry on Friday announced that it is undertaking a nine months performance evaluation for this fiscal year. The plate number system in place has been vulnerable to “counterfeiting, bad governance and crime,” a study presented during the meeting indicated.
It sees other problems in the old plate number registration and distribution. The previous system had gaps in ” vehicle plate number production and assembly, transportation problems, operational gaps, and waste of resources.”
The Ministry also highlighted that the regulation 1050/2017 is introduced to overcome challenges observed in connection with vehicles in the country. It specifies, among other things, plate number types and service delivery guidelines.
Eliminating “waste of resources and properly utilizing the raw materials of the license plate, which are exported at high foreign exchange rates, to reduce the waste of government resources,” is part of the reason for the introduction of new uniform and nationwide plate numbers.
The plate number system in place was based on regional states and city administration. The regional states in Ethiopia are based on ethnic identities. Plate numbers by default used to indicate ethnic identity. There have been complaints in the past that plate number systems cause security challenges for drivers.
According to other local sources, the new system will have plate numbers with “ETH” letters which will also be written in Geez letters – Ethiopia’s ancient scripts.
The variety of plate numbers and symbols will be based on “international conventions,” and will have security features for monitoring and inspection purposes, it was said.
According to local sources, ownership, the kind of service that vehicles provide, and the type of energy consumption are considered in the new plate system. Electric vehicles, for example, will have a different plate number from vehicles that consume fuels.
It is unclear as to when the change will take effect.
It is to be recalled that the Ministry introduced regulation in January 2024 prohibiting the importation of all fuel cars.
