Toronto – Days after reports that the Ethiopian Defense Force will be taking over military camps in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia and be deployed along the Ethiopia- Eritrean Border, Tadesse Worede led interim administration is reportedly saying that the information is not correct.

No Federal Forces will be taking over camps in the region.

About two days ago, information attributed to Deputy Defense Chief of Staff, General Abebaw Tadesse, said that an agreement has been reached with the Interim Administration in Tigray that the Defense Force will be taking over strategic military camps in the region.

According to information, it was military camps the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force used before the 2020-2022 conflict – which was attacked by TPLF forces in November 2020 triggering a bloody war which is said to have claimed over 600,000 lives.

A statement from Tadesse Worede’s office released on February 21, however, stated that the administration did not agree for the Defense Force to take over those camps.

The office reportedly said that “information that the Federal government has ordered deployment of Ethiopian Defense Force is false.” The existing constitution gives power for regional states to authorize troop deployment.

Despite the statement from Tadese Worede’s office, there have been reports in recent week that Ethiopian government deployed mechanized units of Ethiopian Defense Force to areas close to the Eritrea-Ethiopian border and the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) this week accused the Federal government that it is preparing for war in the region and that it will be resisted.

On the other hand, the Federal government itself accuses TPLF of forming a military and political alliance with the Eritrean government.

Notable former TPLF leaders warned for several months now that the region is on a brink of war that could impact the entire region. Opposition parties in the region and the people have been protesting opposing a new round of war.
