Federal forces apprehend Major General Yohannes Woldegiorgis near the Eritrean border amid rapid tactical shifts in northern Ethiopia.

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Major General Yohannes Woldegiorgis, a former senior commander of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and commander of the southern front for Tigray forces, has been taken into custody by federal defense forces and allied local security units in Rama Woreda, Central Zone of Tigray, according to military sources.
General Yohannes, widely known by his moniker “John Medid,” was reportedly surrounded and apprehended alongside his personal security detail, seven colonels, and several other officer-rank personnel near the Eritrean border. Following his capture, military intelligence sources indicated that the general was transferred from the border area to the historic city of Adwa, where he remains in federal custody. Neither the federal government, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), nor representatives close to the commander have issued formal statements, though pro-government channels characterize the development as a voluntary surrender.
Prior to the 2020 northern Ethiopia conflict, General Yohannes held high-level command positions within the ENDF, including leadership of the army’s Western Command. During the two-year Tigray war, he served on the Tigray Military Command Council and Central Command, playing a central role in reorganizing regional forces. In the post-war political landscape, General Yohannes emerged as a prominent figure within the TPLF, aligning with the faction led by Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael amid internal party schisms and publicly opposing the administration of former Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda.
The capture of General Yohannes unfolds amid rapid tactical shifts across northern Ethiopia. Following the resumption of hostilities in southern Tigray in mid-September 2026, federal defense forces and aligned regional peace forces advanced swiftly, taking control of major urban centers including the regional capital, Mekelle, and pushing remaining insurgent detachments toward border sectors in northern Tigray.
