The Tigray Mass Media Agency reports an alleged drone strike by the Ethiopian Defense Force in Maychew, South Tigray, causing civilian injuries and property damage

TORONTO, Canada — The Ethiopian Defense Force reportedly carried out a drone strike in Maychew, South Tigray.
The Tigray Mass Media Agency—a state-owned outlet currently under the control of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)—cited local reports on Saturday, stating, “Abiy Ahmed’s genocidal regime in Ethiopia carried out a drone strike in Maychew of Southern Tigray, injuring civilians and damaging residential property and other assets.”
While local reports indicate that injured individuals were rushed to a hospital in the city, the total casualty number remains unspecified.
The strike took place around 11:30 a.m. local time, though the specific neighborhood targeted has not been identified.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not commented on the latest development, and independent verification is unavailable.
Recent months have seen confirmed drone strikes and civilian casualties in the Tigray region, with schools and health facilities among previous targets of Ethiopian Defense Force attacks. Just over a week ago, three civilians died when the Defense Force executed a drone strike in the Hintalo area.
In June, multiple drone strikes hit Sheraro, a region bordering Eritrea. High TPLF casualties and property damage ensued, though the TPLF declined to release exact figures.
Tensions between the Federal Government and the TPLF escalated further after the latter removed the interim administration in April.
Regional and diaspora political analysts often link recent recurring drone strikes to the formation of the Tsemo coalition, which unifies various armed groups, pending an official announcement.
Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula and federal authorities—including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed—have implicated Eritrea in the formation of the alliance. Despite a fallout with Ethiopia’s Federal Government, credible reports indicate that the Eritrean government and the TPLF maintain a working relationship and an open border, prompting federal accusations that the TPLF violates Ethiopia’s sovereignty.
