Over 5,000 university students enrolled in the Tigray Region submit transfer requests to alternative federal universities amid lingering security risks and armed presence on campuses

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Over 5,000 university students previously enrolled across higher education institutions in the Tigray Region have submitted transfer requests to continue their studies at alternative federal universities, according to Professor Kindaya Gebrehiwot, State Minister and Advisor to the Ministry of Education.
The federal initiative allows students from Mekelle, Aksum, Adigrat, and Raya universities to register through a centralized online portal following widespread safety concerns and lingering security disruptions on regional campuses.
Explaining the rationale behind the federal decision, Professor Kindu disclosed that armed individuals remain present inside several regional university campuses. Despite repeated formal requests from education authorities for non-academic actors to vacate university grounds, compliance has stalled, preventing the establishment of a peaceful learning environment.
To safeguard students’ fundamental right to uninterrupted education, the Ministry of Education authorized temporary reassignments across government universities in other regional states. Professor Kindu emphasized that the online portal was launched to handle the high volume of applications efficiently, allowing students to submit their previous enrollment details, academic standing, and field of study without traveling in person.
Addressing regional concerns regarding the student transfers, the State Minister reaffirmed that the policy carries no political motivation. He stressed that the measure serves exclusively as a temporary humanitarian and safety intervention designed to prevent prolonged academic stagnation for thousands of young scholars.
The announcement aligns with earlier declarations by Minister of Education Professor Berhanu Nega, who assured that temporary placements will remain in effect only until stable, secure conditions are fully restored across all Tigray Region campuses. Once regional safety guarantees are established, students will return to their original institutions to complete their degree programs.
