The Ministry of Education announces the temporary reassignment of university students from the Tigray region to public campuses across Ethiopia via a newly launched online portal

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Ministry of Education announced that university students enrolled in higher learning institutions across the Tigray region will be temporarily reassigned to other public universities throughout Ethiopia due to ongoing instability in the region.
Minister of Education Professor Berhanu Nega confirmed the decision following direct consultations in Addis Ababa with affected students, who gathered at Ministry headquarters seeking administrative solutions after conflict and security challenges disrupted their academic programs.
Addressing student representatives alongside State Minister Professor Kindu Gebrehiwot and senior education officials, Professor Berhanu stated that the government made the decision to safeguard student security and guarantee uninterrupted access to higher education.
Professor Berhanu emphasized that youth must remain focused on their academic advancement, framing student protection as a national obligation. He noted that stabilizing the country depends on supporting the rising generation, asserting that students who fled conflict zones retain the fundamental right to learn in peace.
To streamline the transfer process and avoid administrative bottlenecks, the Ministry established a centralized online portal, eliminating the need for students to report in person to Ministry premises.
Beginning tonight, students can complete their transfer applications remotely via the public online platform. The registration system requires applicants to submit their prior university affiliation, academic year, and field of study to facilitate immediate placement across alternative government campuses.
