Medical Staff Report Influx of Children with Severe Blast Injuries as Urban Areas Face Continuous Strikes

(Nairobi, Kenya) — Heavy military strikes across urban centers in the Tigray region have resulted in civilian casualties, including scores of injured children, medical personnel and local residents reported amid a reported advance by federal government forces toward Mekelle.
Pro-government forces confirmed taking operational control of Alamata town in southern Tigray, while eyewitnesses reported intense strikes targeting municipal infrastructure and residential zones in Maichew.
Medical staff at Ayder Specialized Hospital in Mekelle reported receiving 44 patients suffering from severe blast injuries and shrapnel wounds following intense strikes carried out in Maichew and Alamata between Saturday and Monday. Healthcare workers confirmed that 33 of the admitted victims are children.
Hospital staff described severe traumatic injuries among incoming patients, including extensive thermal burns and severe limb trauma requiring emergency amputations. Medical personnel added that four individuals succumbed to their injuries while in transit to the facility. Severe telecommunications blackouts across the combat zones continue to hinder independent verification of total mortality figures and complicate emergency response operations.
Townspeople in Maichew confirmed that aerial and ground strikes hit the municipality six times. Residents who evacuated wounded family members to Mekelle stated that the strikes directly hit residential neighborhoods, killing local citizens.
Eyewitnesses fleeing Alamata similarly described widespread civilian fatalities following Saturday’s strikes across urban areas. Concurrently, humanitarian personnel operating along the Afar regional border reported that rebel forces took control of Erebti town. Subsequent strikes in Erebti by government forces resulted in additional unconfirmed civilian casualties across the district.
