Toronto – The Ministry of Health is set to introduce regulation regarding medically assisted death in Ethiopia.
According to an Ethiopian Reporter report this week, the regulation is intended to support the legislation on medically assisted death in the country.
The report added that the new law is for patients with “brain death” conditions. Heart and breathing conditions are entirely dependent on the device is another condition for the medically assisted death procedure.
It is also said that it requires agreement from a panel of three medical doctors.
The new regulations seem to have considered family consent as a condition as well. Family members could submit a written request to end the life of a terminally ill family member in a device assisted breathing and health condition.
The timeframe is unspecified in the report.
While many have noticed that Prime MInister Abiy Ahmed’s administration has introduced a number of neoliberal reforms in the economic sector often packaging them as homegrown economic models, the reforms in the social areas that are fundamentally at odds with the values and religious teachings in the country do seem to be overlooked.

The legislation on medically assisted death was introduced in the Ethiopian Parliament in December 2024. Since the ruling prosperity party is in control of over 95 percent of the parliamentary seats, there is no meaningful opposition voice in the parliament to resist the introduction of new bills.
