Toronto – Ethnic Amhara civil and human rights organizations are blaming the international community for its consistent silence regarding drone strikes targeting civilians in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

On Sunday, Anchor Media reported that the organizations stated the “silence of the international community amounts to collaboration with the Abiy Ahmed Administration.”

Despite the extensive and recurring use of drone strikes targeting civilians in the region, Abiy Ahmed’s government continues to receive financial support from the international community. Earlier this month, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgieva met with senior government officials in Addis Ababa, including Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, during her first official visit to the country.

Her assessment was positive, and the IMF is poised to release funds to Abiy Ahmed’s administration under the guise of funding “homegrown” economic growth reform.

Major human rights organizations have also not been vocal in condemning what appears to be unending attacks targeting civilians in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, where fighting has been ongoing between Fano forces and the Ethiopian Defense Forces for nearly two years.

In less than a week, there have been two drone strikes targeting civilians in the region: one in Ambasel and the other in Gojjam. The latest drone strike killed at least 16 civilians, including children, in Goncha Siso Kelebe of the Enesa district in Gojjam. Three roadside stores were targeted, and 12 others were wounded, with some in life-threatening condition.

The government has not yet commented on the attacks against civilians. General Mohammed Tessema, commander of the Eastern Command, who is currently posted in the Amhara region, told his soldiers this Saturday that “the spine of the extremist force [a reference to Fano] is broken.” However, he did not remark on the massacre of civilians.
