Toronto – The Ethiopian Defense Force on Monday commemorated the 5th anniversary of the attack of its Northern Command in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
On November 3, 2020 the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which was in charge of the Tigray regional government at the time, attacked the northern command of the Ethiopian Defense Force in unsuspecting circumstances while many were sleeping around 11 p.m. local time.
Those who survived the attack had to retreat to Eritrea – which was on a friendly relation with the Ethiopian government at the time.
The government has not yet released an official figure of victims from the attack. At some point, the Eritrean government shared information saying an estimated 3000 or more soldiers were attacked at the time.
Five years after the attack, Ethiopia is facing another war in the region. This time a radical shift in alliance has occurred. The TPLF is now allying with Eritrea. A faction that broke away from TPLF is allying with the Abiy Ahmed led government.
Preparations for war, on both sides, have been underway for several weeks now. And they are trading accusations over “preparations for war.”
The 2020-2022 war is believed to have claimed over 600,000 lives from the Tigray, Amhara and Afar regions of Ethiopia. Damage to property and infrastructure is estimated to be hundreds of billions of birr.
