Toronto – A senior Ethiopian Defense Force military intelligence officer is killed in South Gondar, Ebnat, a local Ethiopian News outlet reported on Monday citing sources from the area.

According to Ethio Focus news, Fano forces who “gave in to the government peacefully,” and took a military training as a militia force  are involved in the killing for the Military Intelligence officer whose name is undisclosed.

They were six in number.

The Military Intelligence head and few of his bodyguards were killed in the operation. On the side of Fano, one of  them was reportedly killed in a gunshot fired by the intelligence officer. Another one reportedly sustained injury and the remaining rejoined Fano forces. The condition of the Fano force who was reportedly wounded is unspecified.

While the news report is not independently verified, the local news source has a track record of sharing accurate information particularly in connection with the ongoing conflict between the Fano forces and government forces.  The Amhara region of Ethiopia is still restricted to reporters and Human rights advocates. More updates will be published as they become available.

In a related development, a former Fano member who shifted sides and started working with the government as an intelligence agent in Gojjam is reportedly taken by Fano forces from Birr Sheleko. It appears this happened over the past few days.

The officer, whose name is unspecified, is reportedly taken from Lay Ber area of the military camp in Bir Sheleko.  There was an exchange of fire in the ensuing moments between Fano force and the defense force at Bir Sheleko. No casualties are reported.

Gojjam has been one of the areas where there had been recurring clashes between Fano forces and the government forces. In what appears to be a retaliation for the support that people in the area offered to the Fano movement, recurring reports of extrajudicial killings and drone strikes targeting civilians have been emerging from the area. Last week, at least 120 civilians were killed in a drone strike in Enarj Enawuga district of Gojjam.

On the other hand, the Defense Force has been making new claims of extensive military victory in many areas of the Amhara region in the past two or three days. Activists who are said to be paid by the government have been sharing stories of “surgical operations” – reporting the elimination of at least four Fano leaders in different areas of the Amhara region. They have been reporting similar gains in the Oromia region of Ethiopia against the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).
