Enarj Enawuga massacre said to be unprecedented

Borkena
Toronto – Over 120 civilians are reportedly killed in the latest string of drone strike in the Gojjam, Amhara region of Ethiopia. The incident occurred in East Gojjam zone, Enarj Enawga district, Gedebe locality, on Thursday.
The targets were community members who were organizing for an Easter Celebration Passover Thursday, according to a report by Anchor Media. It cited Fano officials from the Gojjam area.
The other targets were civilians who were reportedly undertaking their economic activity in the town – mostly open air markets. Still others were reportedly building a house ( a mud house). Community support in events like that is common.
It was three rounds of drone attacks targeting different locations in the Gedebe locality.
Fano Marshet Tsehayu, spokesperson to the Gojjam Fano, described the attack as the “worst drone attack” due to the magnitude of the attack and number of casualties.
Women and elderly were among the victims, according to the report.
A day before the drone attack, 20 civilians were reportedly killed where government forces reportedly shelled civilian areas with artillery in another location of Gojjam. The total death toll in two days is 150. Many others are reportedly wounded although the source is unspecified if they are taken to hospital or if their situation is life threatening.
A video footage Anchor media aired with the news purportedly shows community members carrying bodies.
“An attack like this would motivate us in our struggle to topple Abiy Ahmed’s regime,” Marshet Tsehahu told Anchor media.
The loss of civilian lives in less than two days is reported to be 150. There have been voices, including from human rights organizations, that the loss of civilian lives in the Amhara region has been spiraling up due to the conflict in the region.
The Ethiopian government has not remarked on the reports of drone attack in Enargj Enawuga.
Human Rights organizations had reported verified extrajudicial killings and rape by government forces in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
It has been almost two years since the conflict started in the region under the guise of “disarming fano forces” , a mission that appears to be a mirage. There appears to be no end in sight.
Fano forces claim to have controlled over 90 percent of the areas in the region. Yet, there has been internal discord within the Fano movement itself – and it has manifested characters of struggle for power and domination in the movement.
Initially the movement enjoyed a massive grassroots support. It remains a question however if Fano forces would manage to maintain it.
