Toronto – Ethiopia’s House Of People’s Representative this week announced that a consultation “aimed at establishing friendship between Canadian and Ethiopian Parliaments” is held.
According to news disclosure from the Ethiopian Parliament, Tagese Chafo, speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament, on Saturday met with Senator Amir Gerba, member of Canada’s senate.
Tagesse is cited as saying the friendship to be established “will have multifaceted benefit.” With over sixty years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the speaker has reportedly emphasized the need to transform the relation to a “decisive chapter.”
“People to people relation” particularly Ethiopians living in Canada have contributed to strengthen the relation between the two counties, the speaker reportedly added.
On Monday, The Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia confirmed the discussion between Senator Amina Gerba and Tagesse Chafo. It said that they discussed “strengthening parliamentary relations, deepening people-to-people ties, and advancing the Canada–Ethiopia Parliamentary Diplomacy Friendship Group.”
In a related development, Canada’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Africa and Pan‑Geographic Affairs, Cheryl Urban, on a visit to Ethiopia this week. The embassy disclosed that on Monday she had “an engaging roundtable” with Canadian businesses operating in the country. Mr. Mark Carney’s government is in a campaign to diversify Canada trade relations as the Trump administration is pursuing war-like trade policy towards the country.
In December 2025, Ethiopia and Canada held a consultation with the aim to enhance trade relations. Canada has expressed investment interest in the areas of aerospace and renewable energy, among others things.
Cheryl Urban also met with Workneh Gebeyehu, secretary of IGAD – Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) – an organization that draws its members from the Horn of Africa including Ethiopia. Eritrea withdrew from it this year following tension with Ethiopia.
