Toronto – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Thursday disclosed that Hadera Abera, State Minister, held discussion with Canada’s new Ambassador to Ethiopia, Nicolas Simard.

The meeting took place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office.

The state minister has reportedly remarked that Canada’s engagement with Ethiopia has been “constructive even during challenging times.”

He has also expressed appreciation “for Canada’s continued support across a broad range of sectors, including development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, resilience-building efforts, gender equality, sustainable development, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as initiatives that foster peace, security, and recovery.”

The volume trade between the two countries is not still significant. According to sources, the total trade volume in 2024 was under $40 million.  Hadera described current trade relations between the two countries as “below potential.”

The Minister urged more Canadian investment in Ethiopia. The selling point was  “favorable investment environment created through Ethiopia’s comprehensive macroeconomic reform agenda.”

Notably, Canada has recently issued a travel advisory urging citizens to avoid all non-essential trip to Ethiopia. The Amhara region of Ethiopia has been experiencing a devastating conflict for nearly three years. The Oromia region has been in similar circumstances for nearly six years. In the North, there are concerns over resurgence of conflict between the TPLF and the Federal government forces. The confrontational state of relation between Eritrea and Ethiopia has added layers to the security concerns.

However, Canada seems to have interest, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia news release, in “expanding investment in key sectors, including aerospace, education, agro-processing, agriculture, and renewable energy.”

The Canadian Embassy in Ethiopia has not released any news update about the meeting with the state minister, at the time of this writing. However, there seems to be indications that Canada is working on strengthening economic relations with Ethiopia.

The Embassy announced that the Ambassador held a meeting with Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia Eyob Tekalign.

“Strong discussions on boosting economic cooperation, financial-sector collaboration, and key macroeconomic priorities. Looking forward to driving this Canada-Ethiopia partnership forward!,” Canadian Embassy wrote on its social media page.

A day earlier, Eyob Tekaligne stated that he held a “series of meetings”  with the ambassadors of the United Kingdom, Italy, India, and Canada.

What was discussed was, according to Eyob, ongoing economic reforms and “opportunities to expand trade and investment” partnerships.
