Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reorganizes executive leadership with 22 ministerial appointments, including 9 women and 11 new cabinet members

(Nairobi, Kenya) — The House of Peoples’ Representatives, during its regular session on October 8, 2026, officially approved Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s appointment of 22 federal cabinet ministers for the government’s seventh tenure. The endorsed cabinet features key leadership transitions across strategic portfolios, appointing nine women to executive posts and 11 ministers to cabinet-level responsibilities for the first time.
Key appointments include former Minister of Planning Dr. Fitsum Assefa as Minister of Finance. Former Ethio Telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru assumes leadership of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, succeeding Dr. Belete Molla. In the security sector, former Minister of Peace Mohammed Indris replaces Engineer Aisha Mohammed as Minister of Defense.
Economic and trade portfolios saw parallel leadership transitions: Yasmin Wohabrebbi replaces Dr. Kassahun Gofe as Minister of Trade and Regional Integration; former Industrial Parks Development Corporation CEO Dr. Yitagesu Fiseha succeeds Melaku Alebel at the Ministry of Industry; Alemtsahay Paulos replaces Engineer Habtamu Tegegn as Minister of Mines; and Shewit Shanka takes over the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs from Dr. Ergoge Tesfaye.
Further ministerial confirmations include Dr. Sultan Wale as Minister of Irrigation and Lowlands, Sedat Nesha as Minister of Logistics, Engineer Ahmed Abdurahman as Minister of Urban and Infrastructure, Musa Adam as Minister of Peace, Dr. Akilu Tadese as Minister of Youth and Sports, Selamawit Kassa as Minister of Culture and Tourism, Bereket Fisehazion as Minister of National Strategy, and Awelu Abdi as Minister of Labor and Skills.
Leadership across several key federal institutions—including the Ministries of Health, Education, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Agriculture, Water and Energy, and Revenues—remains unchanged.
