Ethiopia : Boat sinks on Lake Chamo, 13 reportedly missing

Toronto – 13 people are reportedly missing after a boat sank on Lake Chamo,Arba Minch, South Ethiopia. It was traveling from the koore zone and Arba Minch, one of the major tourist attractions in the region.

According to a report by VOA Amharic , the accident occurred on Thursday in the evening local time.  It was carrying 16 passengers including the boat operator.

The cause of the accident is not yet determined and Gamo zone police are undertaking a search operation to locate the missing passengers. 

Commander Reta Teklu, public relation head of Gamo zone police, has confirmed to the source that 13 people are still missing. 

Three passengers were found alive. According to Commander Reta Teklu, two of them were able to float all night long using empty Jerricans. They were found nearby. 

The other passenger found himself near a small Island. He too used empty jerrican to save his life. He was reportedly spotted in the evening, apparently on Friday. 

There was a boat accident on Lake Chamo in March 2023 which claimed eight lives. 

Reta said that there is a concern for the safety of the missing persons. It has been more than 24 hours now. 

The lake is known for a huge crocodile population. In 2018, a protestant pastor was devoured by  Crocodile while baptizing his followers on the shores of lake Chamo.
