TORONTO, Canada — The Ethiopian Defense Force has reportedly carried out a drone strike targeting an elementary school in South Gondar, in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, killing at least six schoolchildren and wounding 27 others.

The incident took place Tuesday around 10:00 a.m. in the Dera district’s Sana Kebele, striking Sana Elementary School. Those wounded were admitted to a hospital, but their conditions remain unspecified.

A video circulating on social media purportedly shows the immediate aftermath, with parents rushing to the school to search for their children. Anchor Media and the Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) published the report.

Gashaw Gizat, a spokesperson for Fano forces operating in the area, told Anchor Media that the strike occurred while classes were in session.

Pro-government activists on social media claimed the attack targeted Fano forces rather than schoolchildren, asserting that no children were killed. A 2024 BBC investigative report described as a government having  tens of thousands of media armies.

Neither the Federal Government Communication Ministry nor the Ethiopian Defense Force has confirmed or denied the incident.

While it appears the incident occurred and children were killed, the casualty figures have not been independently verified.

The Ethiopian Defense Force extensively uses drone strikes in conflict zones. The conflict in the Amhara region has persisted for about three and a half years.

Previous reports have documented drone strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, including schools, health centers, and at least two churches in the Amhara region.

The Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM), now part of the Alliance For Survival, operates across the region and controls several areas, including parts of South Gondar.

According to Gizat, the Ethiopian Defense Force carried out another drone strike that same day around 11:40 a.m. in Wollesh, South Gondar, targeting an administrative building.
