Toronto – Last Sunday, Fano forces reported Taeka Negest Atronse Mariam Church, an ancient church in Amahra Sayint, was shelled with heavy weaponry.
The story is confirmed from the church that it was indeed shelled on Wednesday.
The church is located in the South Wollo zone of Amhara region in Sayint district, Amhara region of Ethiopia.
Eyewitnesses confirm that six members of the church community were killed and twenty others wounded. However, church sources say the number of deaths is five.
Head of the church administration Aba Gebreegziabhier Hailemariam is cited as saying that the incident took place on Saturday in the morning around 9 a.m.
According to BBC Amharic, the attack occurred right after mass service. Monastics, elderly months, and deacons were killed, the church head told the source.
21 other were hurt by Shrapnel following what is said to be heavy weaponry attack on the church. Some of them are reportedly taken to Dessie hospital hundreds of kilometers away from the church.
The victims were gathered in the church after mass service for ‘Meba.’
Some of the victims are reduced to permanent disability as they have lost a leg or an arm in the attack. 10 of the injuries are reported to be light.
South Wollo Diocese has released a statement expressing condolence for the victims in the attack. It confirmed that the victims are found priests, one nun who was also serving the monastic community.
Residents who said they were eyewitnesses think that the rebel Fano forces do not have heavy weaponry. They tend to think it is the government that likely shelved the church.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not yet remarked on the story. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Holy Synod has not yet denounced it either.
The Fano forces were not anywhere near the church at the time when the church was shelled, according to reports.

Whoever did this with the goal of inciting or harming innocent and devout believers of any religion in that country should know better that he is playing with fire that will blow up as a raging inferno where nobody will be able to escape from or survive. Such reckless and hideous act should be universally condemned with no ifs or buts. .
It is done with the barbaric Abiye Ahmed order. Since he assume power he has been doing the same all over the Country.
